During this week’s budget debate, Minister of Home Affairs Kareem Musa highlighted the pivotal role he believes the Leadership Intervention Unit (LIU) plays in addressing crime and providing alternatives for at-risk youth in Belize. Musa highlighted that the LIU offers pathways to peace, giving at-risk youth alternatives to crime.
In addition to youth-focused programs, the LIU collaborates with various government agencies to conduct life skills training sessions. These sessions cover communication skills, anger management, conflict resolution, and team building, equipping participants with tools to navigate challenges and reduce recidivism. While the LIU has made strides in crime prevention, challenges persist. Musa acknowledged that the program is not a cure-all, noting that some participants have relapsed into criminal activity. However, he emphasized that individuals who choose to continue a life of crime are disqualified from the program, reinforcing the LIU’s commitment to genuine reform.
Established in 2021 under the Ministry of Home Affairs, the LIU aims to steer individuals away from gang involvement by offering pathways to peace through education, skills training, and employment opportunities.
