Honduran National Fined for Bus Windshield Damage

A Honduran national was charged with damage to property in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court today. Forty-two-year-old Ronald Mejia, a former bus driver with Serrano’s Bus Line, appeared in court accused of damaging the windshield of a bus belonging to Central Transport, the company that replaced Serrano. Mejia pleaded guilty but said that he was repeatedly being harassed by Central Transit drivers and had just lost his temper that day. The Magistrate asked him if he had pressed charges against the bus driver but he said that he was unable to do so because police detained him without giving him the opportunity to explain himself. For his guilty plea, Mejia was fined six hundred dollars plus five dollars cost of court. He must pay his fine by November 30 or he will face two months in prison.
