Honduran national Franklin Velasquez, charged with handling stolen goods for a laptop computer that was stolen from journalist Hipolito Novelo, was denied bail when he appeared today before the Chief Magistrate, Anne Marie Smith and pled not guilty to the charge. The prosecutor objected to bail on the grounds that Velasquez is a flight risk because his immigration status in Belize is uncertain and some of the stolen properties have not been recovered yet and he might hamper the investigation that is ongoing. Chief Magistrate Smith upheld the objection and remanded Velasquez into custody until February 14, 2017. The incident occurred on November 30. Novelo reported to the police that his computer, valued at two thousand dollars, along with the charger, was stolen from his home. He also reported that his cellular phone, valued at one thousand three hundred and ninety nine dollars, was stolen and has not been recovered yet. The police reported that they found Velasquez with the computer.
