Honduran military police recently seized a substantial shipment of contraband cigarettes worth approximately $800,000 BZD, believed to have originated from Belize. The discovery was made aboard an unregistered sailboat named Avante, intercepted near Puerto Cortés, with a total of 574 boxes and 43 loose packets of Chinese-manufactured Modern-brand cigarettes found onboard. The boat’s sole occupant, Guatemalan national Milton Estuardo Guerra, was arrested and charged with smuggling. Initial reports indicate the contraband may have been transported from Belize’s Big Creek Port, raising concerns over the country’s role as a potential point of transit for illicit goods in Central America. Belize has long been regarded as a transit hub for contraband products, including cigarettes from Asia, which are often trafficked through free zones in Corozal and Benque Viejo before entering neighboring countries. The economic gains from such operations are significant, though authorities stress that no specific merchants or organizations have been implicated in this seizure. Belizean police have signaled their intent to review the case in cooperation with Honduran officials, aiming to uncover any operational links and prevent future instances of illegal trade. With regional tensions heightened over smuggling routes and illicit goods, officials are expected to increase monitoring efforts and evaluate the regulatory standards around Belize’s ports and free zones.
