Hopkins Village Council Concerned Over the Sale of Wetlands in the Village

Hopkins Chairman, Orlando Augustine, says that residents are concerned after being made to understand that two hundred and fifty acres of wetland are being sold by a Belmopan realtor. The land in question is part of a larger three hundred and thirty-one point zero-eight plot of wetlands located north of the Hopkins Road, Stann Creek District. Chairman Augustine says that if the wetlands are tampered with, the possibility of Hopkins flooding becomes a high possibility, noting that wetlands act as a buffer, preventing flooding in the village.

Chairman Augustine further notes that the Government has surveyed the land in question with a view to distribute to villagers, but knowing of the ramifications, villagers had agreed to leave the land in its natural form.

Augustine hopes to receive support from the conservation community.
