House Speaker Notes Irony of Gender-Based Violence During 16 Days of Activism

Speaker of the House, Valerie Woods, has noted the irony of women being assaulted and abused, particularly during the country’s 16 days of activism.  Here remarks were made this morning at the start of the House of Representatives.

Valerie Woods, Speaker of the House of Representatives: “Each year when a series of activities are done during this time it’s unfortunate that the scourge of gender based violence raises it’s head. We’ve had victims of this terrible scourge already in the news since the 16 Days started. I see most of us if not all of us are wearing the ribbons as a sign of our support for all the efforts and I thank you for that. I’d also like to ask you if we can stand for a moment of silence for those who have been victims of gender based violence.”
