A troubling environmental issue has emerged at South Saddle Caye in the Southwater Marine Reserve, where illegal dredging activities are reportedly taking place. Allegations have surfaced that individuals are excavating material from the reef, causing significant damage to the delicate ecosystem. This activity, which is strictly prohibited within the marine reserve, has raised alarms for one resident in particular claiming that the severity of the damage is far beyond just excavation. The illegal dredging is believed to be linked to the rapid development of resorts in the area. As tourism continues to grow in Belize, developers are seeking to enhance the appeal of their properties by creating pristine beaches and clear waters. However, this often comes at a cost to the environment. Love News Correspondent, Harry Arzu, spoke to one concerned resident who says that some resort owners are paying for these dredging activities to improve the aesthetic appeal of their locations, disregarding the legal and environmental implications.
South Saddle Caye is located just 6 miles off the coast of Placencia Village.
