Immigration Raid leads to the Arrest of 32 Women

A joint operation involving the Belize Police Department and the Immigration Department led to the detention of thirty-two women with origins in several Central American countries including Honduras and El Salvador. The women were detained at several bars on La Isla Bonita last week and authorities are investigating if they are victims of human trafficking. Head of Belize City’s Crime Investigation Branch Assistant Superintendent of Police, Alejandro Cowo spoke of the raid.

“I know that the immigration department was working with that operation there, it is an immigration operation but they were assisted by the police. Yes, I understand that they have the cooperation from the police department and major crimes unit are assisting them with that investigation and interviewing some of the females that were detained in that operation.”

The Immigration Department is still conducting its investigation. The raid was conducted after reports on alleged human trafficker, Denia Suyapa Ochoa surfaced. Ochoa was arrested by Honduran authorities for allegedly abducting young girls and bringing them to San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, where they were forced into prostitution at a bar.
