Importance of Diabetes awareness

Diabetes Awareness needs to remain constant and that is what the association is working towards.  Cayo Correspondent, Fem Cruz has the story.
Fem Cruz, Reporter: The Belize Diabetes Association and the Belize National Diabetes Selfcare program along with a medical group from Columbus University School of Medicine are presently on a two week outreach called ‘Prevention is better than cure’. Love News caught up with the president of the Belize Diabetes Association, Cornelio Marfeild who explained about the tour and the recruitment of names for the association.
Cornelio Marfield, President of the Diabetes Association: “So we continue our recruitment of diabetics around the country. You will recall that we train health educators and community workers from the Ministry of Health and that was phase one of the project and now we are in the recruitment of diabetics that fall in the criteria of having been recently diagnosed with type 2, no organ failure and registered at NHI clinics. So we are recruiting diabetics from around the country. We have been touring the country with some groups and activists and medical students, we went to Punta Gorda last week and some of the villages there and in Belize City we have a recruiter working at the BFLA polyclinic. On Saturday we have another recruiter working at Matron Roberts and I will be working here in Belmopan at our office on Chiquibull Street. Next weekend we will go to Corozal and we will be working at the Diabetes Association Branch there recruiting more names. We are trying to find diabetics that will fit into this program so that we can assist them with self care management, prevention of these chronic complications that come along with diabetes and just generally have people live a healthy, happy and productive life.”
