The Belize Police Department is conducting internal and criminal investigations following a shooting incident in the wee hours of Saturday morning in San Pedro Town. Reports state that around two forty-five, police officers were patrolling on Coconut Drive when they heard four gunshot-like sounds. Moments after hearing the loud bangs, two male persons riding a motorcycle came from around the corner. PC Yan Chin called out for them to stop; however, they continued on their journey. Chin then shouted “Gun” after which PC Elian Robateau drew his firearm and fired four shots in the motorcycle’s direction. Police Press Officer ASP Fitzroy Yearwood shared more.
ASP Fitzroy Yearwood, Police Press Officer, B.P.D.: “We know hat offices claim that they were on patrol when they heard gunshots coming from an area not too far from where they were. Then they saw a red motorbike with two occupants coming towards them. They made an attempt to stop the riders of this motorbike and these men just ran through the, what you say, the checkpoint. The officers opened fire in these persons’ direction and they’re saying that 20 minutes later they received a phone call that these men abandoned the red motorbike that they were driving and when they proceeded to the San Pedro Polyclinic, one of these men was seen with apparent gunshot wound. We know that, like I said, Internal Affairs by Professional Standards Branch are investigating these matters. Likewise, we have CIB investigating this matter. I know that these officers have been identified so far and we will see what will be the directives from the Commissioner at the end of the investigation.”
