The former Minister of Works, Rene Montero Sr., is still wanted by authorities on a charge of willful oppression which carries a prison sentence of two years. A red notice was released by INTERPOL requesting that any information regarding Montero’s location should immediately be reported to authorities. An investigation into allegations of wrong doings was launched by the ministry under the PUP government against the former minister. The ministry says that it had found evidence that showed that Montero abused his power while in office. During the review period, it was discovered that Montero directed and permitted prolonged use of public property for works to be carried out on his personal property, family members’ property and for his close associates. Investigations revealed that Montero used GOB-owned machinery and fuel as well as public officers to carry out work for three years. According to Interpol’s release, Montero is either likely to be in the United States, Panama or Guatemala. Last year, sources stated that the retired politician was spotted attempting to make an escape to Guatemala when he got word that an arrest warrant would be issued for him.
