Nine Belizeans were returned home safely from El Salvador on a plane chartered by the International Organization for Migration (IOM). The flight completed its second round-trip humanitarian flight on Thursday, September 17, also taking 23 Salvadoran nationals from Belize to El Salvador. The charter flight was necessary because of the border closures in Central America, which has left many migrants stranded. The return was made possible due to close coordination between the Embassies of El Salvador and Belize in the respective countries as well as both Ministries of Foreign Affairs and the Department of Border Management and Immigration Services of Belize. All the migrants received counselling, medical check ups and humanitarian assistance before their departure. IOM Belize also provided protective products for covid-19. The group of Belizeans returning from Central America also received assistance from ION to cover the cost of their mandatory quarantine at hotels in Belize. Since June of this year, IOM has contributed a total of US $30,000 in quarantine and transportation in reception assistance helping 47 Belizeans who returned home. IOM office in Belize has organized two returns to Costa Rica, two humanitarian flights to El Salvador and one to Honduras. A total of 77 migrants who were in Belize have chosen to return voluntarily to their countries of origin under the Assisted Voluntary Return Program. A total of US$95,000 has been used to organize and manage these returns.
