The video of an outraged citizen at the Immigration Department in Belmopan has been making its rounds on social media. The video captures an argument between a man and an immigration officer. The man was reportedly furious because an error was made on his passport last week and upon returning yesterday the error was not corrected. The man began hurling expletives at the immigration officer before being forced out of the building by security. Here is a snippet of the exchange.
Our newsroom reached out to the Director of the Nationality and Passports Department, Mario Arzu who explained that since the reopening of the borders in February the department has been overwhelmed with passport applications and renewals. According to Arzu, the current system which is used to produce passports is outdated and does not suffice the current needs of the entire country. Arzu informed Love News that despite not having all the details of the incident it is unfortunate that the citizen did not get the assistance he needed. In addition, Arzu says that the Government’s new Electronic Passport Issuance and Control System (ePICS) which is expected to be rolled out later this year will allow the department to provide more efficient and timely service.
