Issues with Food Assistance Program

In a time of distress such as this, people have been taking advantage of those less fortunate. According to the Ministry of Human Development, Social Transformation and Poverty Alleviation, members of the public have been falsely called by persons claiming to represent the ministry and being told they have been approved for food assistance.

In a time of distress such as this, people have been taking advantage of those less fortunate. According to the Ministry of Human Development, Social Transformation and Poverty Alleviation, members of the public have been falsely called by persons claiming to represent the ministry and being told they have been approved for food assistance. These reports, if true, not only hinder processing of potential beneficiaries by creating confusion among the applicants and store owners, but also represent a cruel lack of compassion for Belizeans who are most in need. The public is therefore advised of the following: the food assistance process begins with intake either by calling one of the numbers of by filling out the form available on the Facebook page; an assessment officer will then call back applicants and will process the applicant and inform them if they have been approved. Eligibility depends on factors such as other assistance that the household might be receiving which is verified with the Social Security Board and the Ministry’s BOOST and Pantry databases. Once the order has been processed, the successful applicant will receive two sets of numbers with instructions on how to collect their food assistance. All successful applicants are encouraged to wait a half-day before checking in with store to give them time to process the information. Additionally, they are asked to note the name and phone number of the officer who called them. For English speakers who want to benefit from the program, they are asked to call 613-0965 or 613-1424 and for Spanish speakers, call 613-0513 or 613-0986.
