The Japan Embassy hosted their 11th annual Japan Day on Saturday, October 12. The event took place at Princess Hotel in Belize City and saw Japanese dance performances as well as Japanese traditional music performances. Youths who attended the event were able to learn about and apply for any of Japan’s scholarships being offered. According to Japan’s Ambassador to Belize, Hiromasa Yamazaki, Japan day is a way for Belize and Japan to learn more about each other’s culture.
During the day’s event, youths of Belize showed off their creativity and sewing skills in Animeniacs fifth annual Cosplay Competition. A Cosplay competition is an activity where people dress up as their favorite fictional character. The competition, a highlight of Japan day, allows youths to cosplay their favourite characters from video games, anime, manga or movie. According to Animeniacs’ President, Eden Cruz, the competition seeks to explore the talent and creativity that young Belizeans have.
Cruz noted that they are working on hosting a dedicated event where youths can engage in cosplaying and learn about comics and manga.
