A few days ago, 22-year-old Jared Metzgen was a healthy Belizean man. On Sunday, May 24 his future changed when he fell off a bridge in the Gracie Rock area leaving him paralyzed. Tonight, he is in dire need of medical attention for an uncontrollable fever and not being able to breathe on his own. The possibility of him being able to walk again is minimal, but the family is hopeful, and they are pleading for financial assistance to get him the proper care he needs. We spoke to his father, Herbert Metzgen who hopes that his son will make it through.
Herbert Metzgen, Father: “He still has a tube in his mouth along with oxygen that they are giving him and he’s running up a temperature that they cannot control at this moment and we the family we’re trying to see if we can get him to a better hospital so that he can get better care and better treatment so that he can revive back. Also damage from his spine goes all the way down he’s not feeling and the answer the doctor is giving us is that probably he might not be able to walk again and we might have to have a long term service attending to him and as a father would not like to hear that, a father would like to hear a positive thing that yes he might come out of it and get back to work you know ? “
Alisha Valentine, Love FM News: Is he conscious ?
Herbert Metzgen, Father: “He’s conscious, he’s awake. He tried to speak but with the tube in his mouth we cannot hear anything, if you want to hear anything you have to put your ears a little bit closer that you could hear him that’ the only way you could hear him say anything. To me that’s my heart and for me to end up hearing I have to lose him it’s not gonna be nice.”
Jared was transferred from the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital to the Belize Medical Associates earlier today. A barbeque and a bake sale will be held in order to raise funds to assist Jared. Metzgen was driving over a bridge near Gracie Rock when the incident occurred.
