Jasmine Hartin tonight remains on remand, in a jail cell at the Belize Central Prison. Her jail stay at the prison has been extended to at least eight more days. Her attorneys Senior Counsel Godfrey Smith and Hector Guerra appeared before Justice Herbert Lord this afternoon, but it was a brief court session that ended in adjournment. Love News understands that the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions sent notice to the court that bail is being objected to on the grounds that Hartin is a flight risk. Senior Reporter Hipolito Novelo has the story.
Hipolito Novelo, Love FM News: From a partying socialite to an inmate at the Belize Central Prison, tonight thirty-two-year-old Jasmine Hartin remains on remand. She’ll remain behind the prison walls until Wednesday June eight that is if her attorneys Senior Counsel Godfrey Smith and Hector Guerra can convince Supreme Court Justice Herbert Lord to grant her bail. Godfrey had applied for Supreme Court bail on Tuesday, after San Pedro Magistrate Christina Perrera denied the application. Before today’s brief court session, the office of the Director of Public Prosecution sent Justice Lord a notice via prosecutor Shanice Lovell saying that the DPP’s office is objecting to bail on the ground that Hartin is a flight risk.
Shanice Lovell, Crown Counsel: “Yes and we’re going to be working on submissions and then the judge will hear the matter thereafter.”
Reporter: What submissions will be making to the judge ?
Shanice Lovell, Crown Counsel: “It’s in relation to her flight risk status.”
Hipolito Novelo, Love FM News: In court today, Justice Lord requested that written submissions accompanied by case law be delivered by both sides before next week Wednesday.
SC Godfrey Smith, Attorney for Jasmine Hartin: “The matter is adjourned. Why has it been adjourned ? The Director of Public Prosecutions’ Office filed a short statement, just one sentence saying “We object to bail on the basis of flight risk.” with nothing further. The judge has said he wants full submissions, full developed arguments on that to be submitted by Friday. We are to respond on Monday and the matter will continue next week Wednesday. That is all I can say thank you.”
Hipolito Novelo, Love FM News: Mr.Smith can you say whether your client has complained about the conditions of the prison there ?
SC Godfrey Smith, Attorney for Jasmine Hartin: “No further comment.”
Hipolito Novelo, Love FM News: So for the meantime, Hartin remains in jail, away from all the luxurious amenities she once enjoyed. At the start of the session, Justice Lord decried the babbling on social media explaining that all matters are normally sent to the Chief Justice and if its urgent affairs, the Chief Justice then decides which justice will hear the matter. Lord is the only justice holding over for Belize City at the moment and says he does not question the decision of the CJ.
SC Godfrey Smith, Attorney for Jasmine Hartin: “You all were in court, you all would have heard the judge Justice Lord express disapproval of the kind of media publicity he has seen attending this matter. Obviously I have no intention of contributing to that.”
Hipolito Novelo, Love FM News: Reporters from several international media outlets were present for today’s hearing. Reporting for Love News, Hipolito Novelo.
Love News understands that she is currently placed in the female section of the Belize Central Prison. Jasmine Suzanne Hartin, originally from Richmond, Canada, is the mother of two young children.
