Jealousy Suspected in Fatal Ambush on Placencia Road

Another man from southern Belize lost his life over the weekend in what police believe was an act of jealousy. Tonight, police are on the hunt for the man they say ambushed and killed Roy Burgess and injured 26-year-old, Mya James. On Saturday night, Burgess and James were on Placencia Road when they came under attack. Police are still piecing together the incident, but were able to say that Burgess died on the scene while James was taken to the hospital for medical attention. Assistant Commissioner of Police Hilberto Romero says that investigators have since identified a suspect and believe that the incident was an act of jealousy.

ACP Hilberto Romero, Officer Commanding, Eastern Division: “Police responded to a shooting incident at Placencia. Upon their arrival they saw the motionless body of a male person later identified as Roy Burgess with gunshot injuries and Maya James, 26 years, was seen with a gunshot injury to the face. Maya James was taken for medical treatment and is presently recovering. Roy Burgess was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Information is that both of them were in a vehicle in the area when a male person came and fired several shots towards their direction causing the fatal injuries to Roy Burgess and the injury to James. We are seeking on suspect in regards to this murder investigation. We have established it is from a domestic dispute that is what led to this murder. It’s domestic, stemmed from an incident that the deceased had. He was having an affair with the female that he was with.”

Burgess was a resident of Placencia Village.
