The Government of Belize and the Churches have issued a joint statement on the Marijuana referendum. The two sides agreed to three things. First: the Governor General should defer the issuing the Writ of Referendum until a date to be determined. Second: Government will introduce legislation at the next sitting of the House of Representatives, which mandates the holding of the referendum to determine the will of the Belizean people. And third: the two sides committed to dialogue and cooperation on the matter. Viewers will remember the Churches successfully triggered the referendum and the Prime Minister has already indicated that the legislation will not come to force until issues of correspondent banking are resolved.
