Joseph Budna Granted Bail in Defamation and Cyberbullying Case

Joseph Budna is out on a one-thousand dollar bail after he was arraigned in the Orange Walk Magistrate’s Court yesterday.  43-year-old Budna was charged with defamation and cyberbullying after a report was filed with the Police by Orange Walk North Area Representative Ramon Cervantes.  Police Commissioner Chester Williams had announced last Friday that an investigation was ongoing.  Since then, Budna became a wanted man, and was reportedly picked up by the cops over the weekend.  We understand that he spent the weekend in Police detention.  He was taken to court yesterday, and is expected to return on May 17.  Upon getting released, Budna took to Facebook and reported that he is being victimized and abused by the authorities.  As a matter of fact, he says the charges filed against him had nothing to do with Cervantes, but rather for another individual who made a complaint against him.

Joseph Budna is a well-known character who has had his share of problems with law-enforcement both in Belize and Guatemala.  For many years he has presented himself as a news reporter, but has found himself in compromising situations that has marred his reputation.  The most recent scandal was when a minor was killed inside his apartment in the Cayo District last year.  After this incident, Budna relocated to Orange Walk, again acting as a news reporter.  Our archives show that in 2019, Budna escaped from Guatemala where he was serving a twenty-five-year sentence for kidnapping and extortion, and made his way to Belize. In 2021, he was charged in Belize with two counts of sexual assault on a male minor and sent to prison, and served time. Also in 2021, Crime Stoppers International reported that Budna was wanted in the United States on charges of hostage taking, conspiracy to commit hostage taking, using and carrying a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence.
