President of the Justice of the Peace Association, Adrian Danny Madrid, has warned fellow justices to be mindful and alert when it comes to conducting or overseeing marriages. The advisory comes after multiple incidents of teenagers forging marriage documents without a parent’s consent.

Adrian Danny Madrid, JP National President: “First used to be the age of 14 to get married to a older person. Now we have fought and we’ve gotten up to 16. And it’s a very delicate document. Why? Because we have had experience with people wanted to get married and every single time there’s a wedding like that, it is a young lady wanted to get married to an older man with the consent of the parents. And we believe that many times they are telling lies. We try to interview the child. We try to interview the parents. And eventually we find out that they’re doing it because they need money and they are selling their child to this old man. Most of the time, almost every time it’s a young lady getting married to an older man. We never see a young man getting married to an older lady. That seldom happens.”
This advisory formed part of a new training curriculum for JPs. The most recent training was held this past weekend in Dangriga.
