Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital Celebrates Milestone: Three Successful Open-Heart Surgeries Mark a Triumph Amidst Criticisms
It has often been tainted with negative and derogatory remarks, but tonight, the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital is celebrating the successful completion of three open-heart surgeries since the start of the year. As a matter of fact, the cardiac team at the KHMH have completed a total of 60 open-heart surgeries since 2011. It is a milestone for the hospital which have often times been labelled as a sub-standard facility by many in the court of public opinion. Love News stopped in for a visit today, and spoke with the Public Relations Manager, Tylon Tillett, who indicated that the hospital is actually setting a target for this year.
Thylon Tillett, Public Relations Manager, KHMH: “With every project that you start you start of slow, you start off with limited resources but the program is getting more robust, more Belizeans are showing up with these particular types of heart conditions and the KHMH entirely aims to get better at whatever we do. So we’ve already started off this year running with three open heart surgeries. We hope to reach a target of twenty more by the end of the year and we get better and better every time that we do this and so we look forward to offering this service and being more efficient with the Belizean public and being the number one public tertiary healthcare provider. We are very proud of what we have done so far. We’re offering a highly specialized service that is not typically available to Belizeans and so we have some amazing international partners. We must mention Heiman Robocheck Foundation, Ms.Theresa Johnson along with local surgeons such as Dr. Adrian Coye, we have anesthesiologists, we have perfusionists, we have scrub nurses, we have a team here and so these teams collaborate to get these advanced surgeries done here at the KHMH.”
According to Tillett, the hospital has partnered with several agencies to provide life-changing surgeries. He noted that the Gift of Life program as one of the hospital’s partners.
Thylon Tillett, Public Relations Manager, KHMH: “Typically our heart patients are older persons however the Rotary Gift of Life is also here this week performing surgeries for pediatric cases and a lot of times persons end up with heart conditions because of their lifestyle choices but often times it is congenital defects, things that people are born with and we now have the ability to make corrections to these situations, oftentimes it requires surgical interventions but the KHMH also has a very advanced cardiac catheterisation laboratory where we can go in through your vein and fix certain conditions also. So it’s on multiple levels that the KHMH is aiming to take care of the Belizean public’s heart. We say Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital that stands fro KHMH but we also say Kindness Heals Many Hearts and that’s the aim of the cardiac program.”
Several surgeries on pediatric patients are being done this week, through the Gift of Life Program. We’ll have more on this in a subsequent newscast.
