As we mentioned earlier, six murders were recorded over the weekend, five of them in Belize City alone. The first victim was Victor Gibbs who was killed in his vehicle on Friday night. We will take a look at the police investigation of that murder but first we start with the murder of 27 year old Kendis Flowers who was killed sometime around three o’clock on Saturday morning. Police found his body on Mahogany Street. He had sustained a gunshot wound in his left eye. Police also report that they found a black in color, Daewoo brand point nine millimeter pistol with one point nine millimeter live round of ammunition. ASP Alejandro Cowo briefed the media on the investigations.
ASP Alejandro Cowo, Head of CIB, Belize City: “What we understand is that Mr. Kendis Flowers along with others who were at a nightclub on the north side where a dispute ensued between him and other persons. As a result he left from the night club and apparently he was being followed and some altercation happened between them at Mahogany Street which ended with him being fatally wounded. During the shoot out also another male person who was along with him, Tyreke Pitts suffered a gunshot injury to his foot. He was treated and was released. Police at the scene found several expended shells. At present we have two persons in question that are being interviewed that can assist the police in this investigation.”
Flowers is affiliated with the Ghost Town gang and Police say they strongly believe his execution was gang related. But what about the gun found in his hand? Police say they are still in the process of starting a ballistic testing to find out if he ever discharged the weapon.
ASP Alejandro Cowo, Head of CIB, Belize City: “I am not in a position to tell you right away if it was used during the shooting but after the ballistic testing is done then we can verify it. Yes the firearm that was found had a live round on top of his leg and there was a magazine containing other rounds inside of it; one in the chamber likewise. But the shells that were recovered I cannot tell you if that is from his firearm or from the other person until we do a comparison.”
But family and those close to Flowers claim that the scene was staged. They say Fowers is left handed and one of his fingers was injured. Additionally, there are allegations that Flowers may have been killed somewhere else and taken to Mahogany Street later. Finally, there is a suggestion that police was involved but the Belie Police Department says nothing they have gathered so far confirms any of these allegations.
ASP Alejandro Cowo, Head of CIB, Belize City: “I do believe- I was at the scene and I will tell you that that incident happened there. We have interviewed several persons that were along with him, we have recorded statements from them to corroborate what we had said earlier. I cannot tell you if the gun was placed there I know when I went to the scene I saw that firearm on his body. Yes he had an injury to his finger whenever the post mortem is conducted the doctor will be in a position to tell us if it is a gunshot wound or what may have caused that injury to his finger.”
Commissioner of Police Allen Whylie said police was definitely not involved and in Sunday’s press conference, he shared a bit more detail about what investigators have gathered on this case.
