The Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH) today celebrated its 27th anniversary. The KHMH first opened its door in 1995, replacing the Old Belize City Hospital and was named in honour of Dr. Karl Heusner, who was born in Belize on September 6, 1872, to German immigrant parents. Dr Heusner was known throughout the Caribbean and Latin America for his expertise in tropical diseases. Love News was there for the celebration and Hipolito Novelo reports.

John Briceño, Prime Minister of Belize: “Who deserves all the praises is certainly, is all the doctors, and the nurses, and the administrators of this hospital because no amount of money can replace the love and dedication that the doctors and the nurses and the administration have for Karl Heusner and for that we need to recognise that selfless work that you do every single day here at this hospital.”
Hipolito Novelo, Love FM News: The now Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH) replaced the then Old Belize City Hospital in 1995 and is named after Dr Karl Heusner.
Chandra Nisbet-Cansino, C.E.O. Karl Heusner Memorial: “Who gave over six decades of his life to the service of Belize. Back in ‘95 we survived a population of approximately 220,000 people which today has almost doubled to approximately 400,000. Gradually over the years the demand for care and services increased forcing us to expand and deliver. Today we have a lot to boast about and with the dedication of our staff and their awesome ability to rise to the occasion despite the greatest of challenges and the support of the Board and the Ministry of Health & Wellness, we will have a lot more achievements.”
Hipolito Novelo, Love FM News: And for twenty-seven years the KHMH has been providing comprehensive care to the financially disadvantaged and geographically distant of the country.
Andrew Baird, President of KHMHA Union: “Throughout the many years, it has been a joy to work at the KHMHA and to witness the institutional growth from strength to strength from 1995 when the doors were first opened to now where are performing cardiac surgeries, Cat lab, dialysis, and cancer treatment services. I totally want to salute my working colleagues to thank and encourage these exceptional people to tell you all how proud you should be of yourselves.”
Hipolito Novelo, Love FM News: and they should. they were the one at the very front battling the COVID pandemic- and for that the PM says the country is grateful
John Briceño, Prime Minister of Belize: “On behalf of the Government of Belize and a grateful people, we want to thank you because in the darkest of days during the pandemic, whilst many of us were staying at home, you all were coming to work every single day and in some instances, you were unable to even go visit your family for a week or two at a time because we did not understand the virus during the beginnings of the COVID-19 pandemic. That showed great dedication and love for the work that you do.”
Hipolito Novelo, Love FM News: And the work continues…. never ending dedication not only from the doctors and nurses but from the cooks, domestics. cleaners, assistant and everyone who makes the KHMH the country’s flagship hospital. Reporting for Love News, Hipolito Novelo.
