KHMH Reports 4 Maternal Deaths (Covid-19 Related)

A young woman lost her fight with Covid-19 over the weekend.  The 31-year-old victim, Nicole Baptist was pregnant when she became infected with the virus.  She was subsequently admitted into the hospital and was intubated on Tuesday but all efforts were futile.  Dr Andre Sosa spoke on the cases they have been seeing involving maternal deaths.

Dr.Andre Sosa, KHMH Chairman: We are very alarmed by the state of maternal deaths that we have seen. In the last four weeks we have had five maternal deaths at the KHMH of which four are directly related to COVID. In all of last year there were only two deaths and we believe that it’s a reflection of that aggressiveness of the Delta strain that appears to be the cause of this third wave. This alarm that we have needs to be translated into action and there are several recommendations that our OBGYN specialists here at Karl Heusner have made or are making to the Ministry of Health and Wellness, to the Maternal and Childcare Unit to try and insulate in as much as is possible the pregnant population from the very high risk that comes with acquiring COVID.”

Nicole Baptist was the General Manager of Paulino’s Funeral Home and was the spouse of Milton Paulino.
