Tensions at the Belmopan City Council seem to be dissipating in the past few weeks. As we’ve been reporting, tensions at the city council were high between Mayor Sheran “Sharon” Palacio and some councillors. Five of the councillors brought as many as fifteen complaints against Palacio who accused them of sabotage and insubordination. The situation was getting so contentious that the Ministry of Local Government had to intervene. Minister Oscar Requena gave us an update.
Oscar Requeña, Minister of Local Government: “We met with the Mayor and the Councillors and as the ministry responsible for oversight for the Belmopan City Council and other municipalities, we clearly outline our expectations in line with the Belmopan City Council Act. The Mayor and the Councillors undertook to work hand in hand, you know, to address the issues and the concerns and I must that so far you know, we are seeing a positive change and that is commendable and I want to encourage the Mayor and the councillors to work together because at the end of the day, the Belmopan residents deserve no less and we will continue to monitor the situation.”
