Labour Department Initiates BPO Job Training in Punta Gorda
The Labour Department is spearheading a job training in Punta Gorda Town, Toledo District for tomorrow. The training is specific for soon-to-be graduates and those seeking employment in the BPO sector. According to Labour Commissioner, Risella Dominguez, the increase of call centers has reflected a high demand for trained workers.
Rissela Dominguez-Patt, Labour Commissioner: “We decided to invite the different schools so that we can conduct trainings, job preparedness trainings to these schools. We also invited the BPO Association so that we can bring the BPO industry to Toledo district. And so during the period September 14 to October 5 we did several job preparedness trainings in schools. So we reached out to Toledo Community College, Julian Cho Technical Highschool, Corazon, the University of Belize and so we reached out to all these schools and we conducted job preparedness training to these schools to prepare them because we’re going to have a BPO simulation interview in Toledo and this will take place on the 10th, this will take place this Friday at 9am and this will be at the Toledo Community College Auditorium. This is not only for the students. We try to prepare them but also for all those who are seeking employment in the Toledo district who are interested in working in the BPO industry and so we have our link a form that you fill out we shared it on our Facebook page the Ministry of Rural Transformation Community Development Labour and Local Government. There is a form if anybody is interested they can go to our Facebook page check the form click the link and then that will take you directly into a form which you need to fill out to preregister. At this moment we’re still taking applications.”
Dominguez explained that while the BPO industry is booming, it is still looking to further expand in the country.
Rissela Dominguez-Patt, Labour Commissioner: “The main objective actually of this BPO simulation interview because the BPO industry wants to expand you know. The BPO industry mostly as I said in terms of the labor force survey the highest was in Belize City and so they’re trying to move to other districts too because it’s congested in Belize City so they’re trying to find others who are interested. And so if we can indicate through this BPO simulation the main objective is to ensure that we can prove that the Toledo persons living in the Toledo district are capable, have the qualifications , we have the workforce who can do the job and so we can convince the BPO Association that they need to open a call center or a BPO in the Toledo district. And so that is why it is very important for those who are seeking employment to come to the interview you know ? We need to show that Toledo they have persons who are interested and who can do the job. Once we can show that then we can convince the BPO Association to open a call center there. Even without that with the online or work from home some of these call centers have indicated that they’re willing to hire and so there is an opportunity. So yeah there is an opportunity for employment. There is opportunity for possibility of call centers to open in the Toledo district as well. So this simulation will after this simulation then they’re going to decide what avenue they’re going to take but definitely they have indicated they’re interested in those who can prove that they have the qualifications they’re ready to hire.”
