A man was killed in a traffic incident on Saturday night on the Philip Goldson Highway. Police were alerted of the incident just before nine o’clock where they encountered the body of 30-year-old, Elias Nahum Vellos. ASP Yearwood spoke on the progress of the investigation whilst attributing the poorly lit portion of the highway as a contributing factor.
ASP Fitzroy Yearwood, Public Relations, Belize Police Department: “Police responded to a scene where they saw the motionless body of a Hispanic male person. Initial investigation revealed that Dylon Abraham was driving from the direction of Ladyville to Sandhill Village when upon reaching that area he hit Elias from behind and off his bicycle causing his fatal injuries. He was seen with severe head and body injuries. He was transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. NIP has been served. I’m not certain if he submitted any blood and alcohol sample so I’ll have to get back to the investigators and then I can pass that to you but I know he was served with a notice of intended prosecution.”
Reports to our newsroom say that the driver was in a Mitsubishi Galant SUV heading towards the Boom Junction when an oncoming vehicle swerved into his lane. In trying to avoid a collision with the vehicle, Abraham reportedly pulled onto the shoulder of the road and that was when he hit Vellos who was on a bicycle. Love News understands that a urine sample was taken from the driver, 25-year-old, Delawn Julian Abraham.
