Today marked the last day in the September cycle to register to vote in this year’s general elections. Long lines of people were seen outside the different Elections and Boundaries offices across the country. According to Josephine Tamai, Chief Elections Officer, they are unable to confirm that today will be the last day to register for this year since no date has been announced for elections. She also stated that all offices were busy today as they are obligated to attend to all persons who were in line before 4:30. In total, they received a little over thirteen thousand applications for registration from July to now and eight thousand five hundred applications for transfers from between July and August. Of course, not everyone who applies will be on the registration list. Officers are currently out conducting investigations and the public is asked to cooperate with them and provide truthful information. Additionally, Tamai pointed out that many persons were of the impression that the deadline to register was extended by a day, and that yesterday was to be the last day, however, legally, once a deadline falls on a public and bank holiday or weekend, the next working day would bet he official deadline.
