Latest COVID-19 figures

And with thousands of persons flocking to Belmopan for Agric this weekend, there is the concern that the National Agriculture and Trade Show will become a super spreader event. The number of new COVID cases has been increasing over the past month. Hipolito Novelo breaks down the figure.

Dr. Melissa Diaz-Musa, Director of Public Health and Wellness: “Belize recorded its first case of COVID-19 in March 2020 and to date, we have seen four large waves of this relentless virus. We are now entering our fifth wave.”

Hipolito Novelo, Love FM News: And that fifth wave began in May, May 3rd to be precise about two months after the COVID-19 measures were relaxed. This is when the Ministry of Health and Wellness began recording an increase in new infections and from 36 new cases early May to 132 new cases in mid-May to 198 cases a few days ago.

Dr. Melissa Diaz-Musa, Director of Public Health and Wellness: “We have a total of 58,419 cases and to date, 677 Belizeans have lost their lives due to this virus.”

Hipolito Novelo, Love FM News: The most recent COVID related death was on May 18. It was an unvaccinated person from the Stann Creek district. The rising numbers of new cases are causing rising concerns with the belief that there will not be a return to the days of restrictions. Dr. Russel Manzanero says that every single person should make it their responsibility to take safety measures.

Dr. Russel Manzanero, Epidemiologist, MoHW: “These increase of cases, it’s because of us. I mean if we take our measures into place, we get our vaccines, we are using our masks, we still do our social distancing, these numbers will be able to maintain itself. However, I know with the, some movements and people intermingling that is what is bound to happen. So again, these numbers can change, I mean, if we continue to vaccinate. For those who can take their boosters, we maintain our use of the mask for social distancing, of course this is something that can change.”

Hipolito Novelo, Love FM News: But how much will it change for the better? The question is asked because as Belize returns to pre-COVID status, events like this weekends’ Agric Show will be held and the best fight against the virus is the vaccine. But, even so, the Minister of Health & Wellness, Kevin Bernard says “There are challenges.”

Kevin Bernard, Minister of Health & Wellness: “We will continue to implement an extensive public education campaign on vaccines to overcome vaccine hesitancy and misinformation.”

Hipolito Novelo, Love FM News: Reporting for Love News, Hipolito Novelo.

One hundred new cases were recorded today. This puts the number of active cases at one thousand and ninety-nine. Fortunately, there are no deaths to report tonight.
