26 women are detained at the Orange Walk police station since Friday night and until news time no reason has been given for their detention. LOVE NEWS has credible information that Friday night around 10, several raids were carried out simultaneously at bars in Orange Walk Town. The operation, we understand, was carried out by officers from the immigration department in Belmopan with assistance from officers attached to the Police department special branch also from Belmopan. Love News was informed that the women detained include six Guatemalans, 16 Hondurans, and four Belizeans. The bars that were raided included Mexicali Bar, Copa Cabana, Picame and Paraiso Bar. We are not sure if any of the persons detained includes minors. We contacted Orange Walk Police OC Selvyn Tillett who told us he is not at the liberty to share any information on the issue as the matter is being led and investigated by the Belmopan immigration office. A lawyer who has been contracted to represent three of the Belizeans detained spoke with us and explained that the women were brought into the police station around 10pm Friday and until 6 this evening they had yet to be charged for any crime. He noted that it is a clear violation of the rights of all 26 women as more than 48 hours has elapsed and no charges have been levied on them. Sources tell LOVE NEWS that three Belizeans were also detained by immigration officers under the suspicion of ownership or management of bars.
