Lead Government Senator supports Senate Special Select Committee
During today’s meeting, Senator Eamon Courtenay, Leader of Government Business, supported the motion to appoint the Senate Special Select Committee but stated that he believes the matter can open a can of worms for the government. Courtney stated that considering the matter being in the public domain and the recent leaks, it may lead result in legal ramifications.
Eamon Courtenay, Minister of Foreign Affairs: “I was simply alluding to the fact that the government supports the motion. We think that there should be an inquiry into all the matters surrounding this whole Portico issue. What I said was that there is a lot of innuendo, there is a lot of slander, there is defamation that is about. The Senate needs to confine itself to the facts, to what has happened, seek the documents, seek the witnesses and come and have a full hearing and then report and should not fall victim to the fake news and to the alternative narrative that is being propagated by certain persons. There are a lot of people who have been deeply involved in this in the United Democratic Party and have all of a sudden attempted to cleanse themselves of the stench of the corruption associated with it. It’s not that easy. And I prefer to wait for the inquiry to investigate and let us see where this leads.”
