Leader of the Belize Territorial Volunteers, Will Maheia, says it’s time for Toledo East Area Representative, Mike Espat to go. Mehiea’s comments come after Espat condemned the BTV’s last trip on the Sarstoon River that resulted in an exchange with the Guatemalan Armed Forces. Espat said the BTV antagonized a bigger enemy and described the trip as madness. He also stated that Toledo district, by and large, did not support taking Guatemala’s claim to the International Court of Justice. Maheia has since fired back and questioned the politician’s stance.
Wil Maheia, Belize Territorial Volunteers: “You know it’s sad but we all know Mike Espat he is like you know a dinosaur right now it’s time for him to go. You know, for him to me, appeasing the Guatemalans how can an elected era representative who is supposed to represent his constituency say that we are antagonizing the Guatemalans when we did not cross into Guatemala, Guatemala crossed into Belize, he should be the one that is lecturing the Guatemalans. He should be the one that’s condemning it. Instead, he is appeasing the Guatemalans. He is condoning their actions because Guatemalans clearly came into Belize and removed our flag from Belizean soil. He did not condemn that. It just goes to show you his love for Guatemala. I mean, it’s ridiculous that he would say something like that without even condemning the fact that Guatemalan armed forces invaded Belize and removed a Belizean flag. How Belizean is he?”
Minister of Public Service, Political and Constitutional Reform, Henry Charles Usher, also weighed in on Espat’s comments and said that he has the right to an opinion.
Henry Charles Usher, PUP Chairman: “I can say that the Minister of Foreign Affairs has strenuously said that the Guatemalans are coming into our territory, are committing acts that we don’t endorse, that we are totally against, that we condemn. Persons are free to make public statements, but as a government policy, it has been condemned.”
Love News met up with Mike Espat today, but he refused to respond to Wil Maheia.
