Leader of the Opposition Acknowledges Reduced Crime Rates but says there is much more to be done

After being severely critical of the Police Commissioner, the Leader of the Opposition complimented the low rate of major crimes for the year 2023.  In a press conference held this afternoon, Barrow, despite the low murder rate in over a decade, played it off, saying there is much more to do, and nothing to get too excited about the reduction in murders.  He also made sure to call for the removal of the Police Commissioner.

Moses “Shyne” Barrow, Leader of the Opposition:The statistics reduced drastically in 2020. We went down to 102. During the UDP administration we were at 99 I believe that was the lowest. We had a drastic drop in 2013 from 2012 so again while I am happy that we are making moderate statistical improvements I would encourage the Minister of Police and the Commissioner of Police and the Prime Minister not to get ahead of themselves because there’s a lot of work to do. I always take my hat off to the Belize Police Department and all of the hard working police officers that we have that do their best to serve and protect us but there is a lot of work to do so that we can have the systematic overhaul that we need so that we can not just have fifteen less murders than we had in the lowest period during the UDP era but to have a complete drastic reversal downward trend when it comes to murder. So there’s a lot of work left to be done so I will not get too happy because we need to strengthen the Department of Public Prosecution, we need to strengthen the crime processing one of the gentlemen that was just convicted of murdering the tourist I believe the brothers murder charge was just dropped because the witness withdrew their statement. These are the things that we need to fix. Now if you’re talking about we’re down to let’s get to 20 murders, no murder satisfies me that’s where I’d like to be. I encourage the Commissioner of Police, the Minister of Police no to get ahead of themselves and I encourage the police officers to continue working hard I appreciate the hard work that they are doing but they still need better leadership, we still need a new Commissioner of Police, we still need a new Minister of Police because they’ve fallen woefully short of all of the promises that they have made similar to the sugar industry.”

For 2023, Belize reported 88 murders, as opposed to previous years.
