Legal Aid Bill, 2023 tabled in the House of Representatives

Yesterday, we reported that Cabinet greenlighted the tabling and introduction of the Legal Aid Bill, 2023. The idea, as we told you, is to put in place a proper legal structure to provide legal aid services to indigent citizens and to ensure that they are provided with adequate legal services. In presenting the Bill, Minister of Education and Freetown area representative, Francis Fonseca explained how this bill ties into the necessary adjustments to the Senior Courts Act.

The amendment to the Senior Courts Act includes repealing Section 225 for legal aid to be managed through the Legal Aid Commission and not the Office of the Registrar.
