The Belmopan Mayor and the Area Representative had a bit of a spat over who is to be credited for the repairs on Libertad Avenue. Love IS Everywhere highlighted the deteriorating condition of the avenue yesterday, which prompted a response from Area Rep, Oscar Mira, who committed that he would ensure that works begin immediately. It turns out, however, that the repairs were within the purview of the Belmopan City Council, and not Mira’s office. Mayor Pablo Cawich says he was disappointed when Mira took to social media, somewhat taking credit for the street works.

Pablo Cawich, Mayor, City of Belmopan: “We had brokered a partnership with RECONDEV and the honorable Mira. On May 2nd I had met with the honorable to discuss the project a bit further at which point we agreed on a quantum that would be City Council’s contribution towards the project. So those funds were handed over a couple days after, it was still early May. At that point we were waiting for the jobs to commence. Thankfully we have seen that the works have now commenced which I believe is one of the important things. I must say that it was a little bit disappointing. I feel a little bit a way that the area rep forgot the discussions that we have been having. But I don’t focus on things like that. I focus on always ensuing that we’re moving forward and that is always best though working with people. So I am not someone who is petty and holds onto negativity or hold backs.”
According to Mayor Cawich, the Belmopan City Council had already allocated funds for the repairs since May of this year through a partnership with RECONDEV.
