Lionel Arzu is no longer the Ombudsman for Belize. Love News has confirmed that Arzu’s one year contract was not renewed. In fact, we have learnt that the post has been vacant since the start of the year. Arzu was the country’s Ombudsman for five years, since being appointed in 2013. Back in January 2016, the Senate met in Belmopan where they debated Arzu’s re-appointment for that year. Back then, Leader of Government business, Godwin Hulse told the Senate that Government was satisfied and that Arzu was fit to be reappointed. Lead Opposition Senator at that time, Lisa Shoman, disagreed. It is not sure when Cabinet will designate another appointee for the post. After that individual is chosen, parliament will then approve the appointment. The Ombudsman receives and investigates complaints made by persons who allege wrongdoing, corruption, abuse, injustice or injury by an authority.
