In 2020, Lord Michael Ashcroft announced a ten-million-dollar donation to the national effort to combat the COVID-19 pandemic. Several donations have been made under the Lord Ashcroft COVID-19 relief fund and the Belize Bank Limited continues to be the custodian of the funds to be disbursed on behalf of Lord Ashcroft. On Wednesday, another donation was carried out and the recipient was the Belize Athletic Association. The donation is for equipment, training and uniforms. Handing over the donation on behalf of Lord Ashcroft was Belize Bank Executive Director, Lyndon Guiseppi.
Lyndon Guiseppi, Executive Chairman, Belize Bank Limited: “He saw it fitting to contribute to what he thought was an organization which is doing an exceptional job. Mr.Dion Sutherland spoke about the performance of the Belize Athletics Association in the recent Central American games, we saw what happened at the last Olympics and I think this is simply encouragement to the athletes of Belize to continue strive for excellence in all that they do. This first installment of the donation comprises of a number of athletic equipment as you saw here: javelins, discuss, hurdles etc. The other two installments will involve a technical component which will involve training for coaches and the third component will be the purchase of uniforms for members of the athletic association and the various teams that will represent Belize going forward.”
The value of the donation is a hundred thousand dollars. President of the Belize Athletics Association, Deon Sutherland says the funding will play a vital role in the athletes’ development.
Deon Sutherland, President, Belize Athletics Association: “This donation has been in the making for about a year now and we’re very grateful for it and this will definitely help our athletes create that environment for them to perform and train and perform better.”
Reporter: How many athletes will be benefiting from this donation ?
Deon Sutherland, President, Belize Athletics Association: “At present we have close to over five hundred athletes right now that are well you know this is end of season but we still have four more events to go for this year regional and international events so we’re looking at close to a hundred athletes right now considering to use these events as early as next week when we have a track meet. As you know when you have the right equipment your performance will be good so with the right equipment for example the wind gauge to monitor the windspeed when they’re running, for example the clock to have proper timing and so that their timing can be accepted internationally so those are benefits of these types of equipment.”
