Magistrate Court’s conviction rate is 72%

A 2014 United Nations report on Drugs and Crime, listed Belize as the country with the third highest murder rate in the world, which stood at 44.7 per 100,000 in 2012. In 2017, the criminal activities in Belize continue to escalate.  A report from the United States Department of State Bureau of Diplomatic Security, OSAC associates the high criminal activity with a low conviction rate. Meanwhile, the convictions in the Belize Magistrate Court is seemingly better than the Supreme Court. Love News spoke with Superintendent Carol Tucker, Officer Commanding the Prosecution Branch who explained.

Superintendent Carol Tucker, Officer Commanding Prosecution Branch

“For 2017 our conviction rate is 72%. It includes burglaries, theft, aggravated assault, sexual cases, disorderly conduct we have the minor cases which are public drinking, threatening words. When it comes to the indictable matters, the murder we only go to the preliminary inquiry stage and thereafter it goes to the Supreme court and the Crown Council takes that over at the Supreme Court.”

Over the years, there has been training by theUnited Nations Regional Centre for Peace, Disarmament and Development in Latin America and the Caribbean (UNLIREC) and other initiatives to help strengthen the conviction rate.
