In news from the courts, twenty three year old Josue Ortiz pleaded guilty to manslaughter for the death of Bella Regina Williams before Justice Antoinette Moore in Belmopan Magistrate’s Court. The sentencing has been deferred until April 15, 2019 where mitigation pleas will be heard on his behalf. In the matter, Ortiz was represented by attorney Oswald Twist and the prosecutor in the case for the DPP’s office was Crown Counsel, Javier Chan.
The incident happened on July 24, 2016at 9:30 p.m. Josue Ortiz and his brother Fredis went to La Cabana Night Club in Belmopan City and met of Bella Regina Williams better known as Gina. They had drinks and when the bar closed they left enroute to San Ignacio in a taxi. Josue Ortiz and Gina exited the taxi at Roaring Creek since she did not want to go to Cayo. They hitchhiked to Gina’s house at 2 Zultana Street in the Las Flores area of Belmopan. Ortiz grabbed Gina and she felt to the ground. Ortiz said he told police he picked up two stones and stone Gina on her head. The following day at 6:30 a.m., her body was found by her 13-year old daughter in a semi undressed state in front of the house. In a caution statement to police, Ortiz told the police, “I will say everything. I did not want to kill Gina. I wanted to have sex with her and she wanted to run from me and she dropped and hit her head and she dropped unconscious. I picked up a stone and hit her on her head and I went to my house on my bicycle.” The postmortem which was conducted by Doctor Mario Estradabran revealed that the body had six blunt wounds on different areas of the head and multiple concussions on her face. An internal examination showed that she had multiple bruises on her scalp and the skull showed fracture of the right side of the had up to the base of the cranium. The brain showed multiple concussions and hemorrhage. Ortiz was committed to stand trial for murder until he changed his not guilty to murder to guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter yesterday.
Also in the courts, a 17 year old who was arraigned for raping a 16-year-old girl- Is out on bail. The 17 year old was today taken to the Belize Family Court to be arraigned on a single charge of rape. We cannot say his name since both accused and victim are minors by law but we can confirm that the 17-year old was taken to the Belize City Family Court this afternoon at 2. He was brought in handcuffs and appeared before Magistrate Shantea Morrison-Novelo. No plea taken since the offense is an indictable matter. He was offered bail in the sum of $3,500 which he met and is due back in the Belize Family Court on April 30, 2019. The accused rapist could not sign a bail on his own due to his age and so a parent had to sign bail for him and he was handed into the care of that adult who is now responsible to make sure he shows up to court on all future adjournments.
