Man charged with possession of illegal machete faces jail time for unpaid fines.

A Ladyville man who was charged for having a machete longer than the prescribed legal length, found himself in more trouble today for unpaid court fines. Forty-three-year-old Eckert Fitzgibbon was arraigned in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court before Chief Magistrate, Jayani Wegodapola on a single charge of possession of an article with a blade. He was granted bail in the sum of one thousand dollars plus one surety of the same. In court, the prosecutor raised the issue that Fitzgibbon had an unpaid fine of over twelve hundred dollars for a previous conviction and made no effort to pay anything towards the amount. He needs to pay at least two hundred dollars towards the fine by August 4, or he will face nine months in jail. Meanwhile, Fitzgibbon was unable to meet his bail for the machete, and was remanded to the Belize Central Prison until he is able to do so.
