Man Charged with Shooting at Police Officer Remanded to Prison

A man who was wanted for allegedly shooting at a police officer last week in Hattieville was remanded to the Belize Central prison. 25-year-old, Blake Norman Lewis, appeared unrepresented before a magistrate in court today where he was charged with aggravated assault with a firearm and discharging a firearm in public. Additionally, Lewis is expected to be accused of two other criminal offenses of possession of a firearm without a gun license and attempted murder. Lewis was remanded to prison until April 15. According to a police report on February 8, Police Officer Roy Rivera reported that he was at home when his attention was drawn to a man walking on the street in front of his home with what appeared to be a firearm. He approached the man and that is when Lewis pointed a firearm in his direction and fired several shots. The police officer fired back, but Lewis still managed to escape. He was captured by police on Friday in the Freetown Sibun area where he was seen suffering from a gunshot injury. He was admitted to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital.
