Man Dies After Alleged Burglary on Tobacco Caye

Police in southern Belize are investigating the death of an alleged burglar on Tobacco Caye in the Stann Creek District. According to reports, the body of a man identified as 22-year-old Leonard Balthazar was found on the island, off the shores of Dangriga, early this morning. Around 2:30 a.m., Balthazar allegedly broke into a cabin on the island and began going through the belongings of two tourists who were sleeping at the time.  The couple was awakened with one of them confronting the intruder.  A struggle ensued, during which Balthazar was thrown over the cabin’s balcony. Police say he landed on the ground and sustained injuries to his body. Employees of the lodge on the island attempted to revive him, but the Dangriga resident was later pronounced dead. Police are investigating.
