Yesterday around 5pm, police officers went to a farm along the Swasey River in the Independence area of Stann Creek District where they saw the body of a man. The man was lying face up on a small island in the middle of the river. He was later identified as 38-year-old Mario Rene Martinez Gomez, a Honduran farm worker residing at Farm 28. Sometime around 4pm, he was fishing in the Swasey River when something caused him to fall in. Another man later found him as he was drowning, but was unable to help him because he could not swim. The man quickly made his way into the farm for assistance but when he returned, he found Gomez at the bottom of the river bed. There were no signs of violence seen on the body.
