Man Fined for Possession of Out-of-Season Conch

A Belize City man charged with having out-of-season conch was fined in court today after changing his not-guilty plea to guilty. Fifty-year-old James Rhaburn was charged with possession of conch in the closed season back in September for sixty-two pieces of conch. For his guilty plea, Rhaburn was fined a thousand dollars for the offense. He was also charged fifty dollars for each piece of conch, which totaled three thousand one hundred dollars. Combined with the cost of court fines, Rhaburn was fined four thousand one hundred and ten dollars. Rhaburn has until December 29, 2023, to pay the fine imposed for the offense, or he faces six months in prison. He was given until February 29, 2024, to pay the penalty for the conchs, or his assets would be sold to cover the cost in a procedure called distress.
