The third murder occurred in Belize City last night just after eight o’clock. 20-year-old Troy Polonio was shot in cold blood yesterday as he held his infant son in his arms. Polonio was standing in the yard that his child’s mother lives when a gunman opened fire in his direction. His son was uninjured, but Polonio succumbed to his injuries. The victim’s father, who declined an on-camera interview, said that he saw when the gunman ran away but he was oblivious to the fact that his son had just been killed. The gunshots rang out just yards away from Precinct Two on Raccoon Street, Belize City. Senior Superintendent Hilberto Romero spoke on this investigation as they briefed the media earlier today.
Sr.Supt. Hilberto Romero, Deputy Head of the National Crimes Investigation Branch: “On Monday the 14th day of October 2019 around 8:45 pm there was a shooting incident at Raccoon Street. Police responded and thereafter visited the KHMH where they found Troy Polonio with a gunshot injury to the chest. Investigations revealed that he was hanging in the street at that particular area when a male person came up and fired two shots at him. He was taken to the KHMH where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The information that we have is that he was standing there and this male person just came up to him and shot him. Our patrols are out in particular areas, this person took the opportunity, the patrols were elsewhere and this is what transpired. The police responded as soon as they got the report but by then the person had already fled from the area and he was not found. The investigators are looking to determine what was the motive to see if there will be any retaliation or if we need to see if there is any issue with this person or other persons.”
Polonio’s cousin, who chose to remain anonymous, explained how the family felt when they heard the news.
Cousin of Deceased: “Last night we heard that he got shot and we were very sad and depressed and at the moment we just went and when we got there we didn’t see anything because they had already taken him to the hospital. We don’t know him as a problem person, all he does is stay home or go look for his baby and that is it and come back. He liked to listen to music and just relax and hang in the yard and sometimes with his son.”
There are no suspects and no motive in this murder. Police are also unsure if Polonio is affiliated with any known gangs, but according to his family, he is not.
