A man from Independence Village, Stann Creek District was shot this morning just before seven o’clock. 37-year-old Anthony Parks received four gunshot wounds to the right shoulder, the abdomen, the left side of his thigh and in the back. Park’s common-law wife, Shakira Diaz, told our Stann Creek Correspondent, Harry Arzu, how the entire ordeal unfolded.
Shakira Diaz, Common-Law Wife of victim: “This morning we were at home in bed and I heard someone come out and holler for my boy….”
Harry Arzu, Stann Creek Correspondent: What time was this ?
Shakira Diaz, Common-Law Wife of victim: “About six early morning. I told him not to go out and instead make me go answer. When I reached outside he told the boy not to come here with his problems because he always starts problems and then he goes to police , because he had already sent my boy to jail and he went and dropped the charges. Well this morning he came and he actually hailed my boy, my boy came out and talked to him a little five they were going back and forth and my boy actually stood up right there and he fired four shots at him and none caught him, when my boy turned his back to go into the yard he shot him in his side and then he fired six more shots but out of the six more three caught my boy and I came out with two elephant foot and I stoned him with the two elephant foot and he turned around and fired two shots at me so I ended up running. I ran and ended up reaching all the way to the back of the yard. When I was at the back of the yard he was on the ground so my cousin came out and my cousin came to assist me and he ran him down with a pint bottle and when I turned back and I was down there it was because my boy had already passed out with about three or four gunshots. The doctor said so many of his organs got messed up and I don’t know, right now we need three pints of blood. Fifty fifty the doctor said so I don’t know what will happen.”
Normally, accused persons are not named until after they have been charged. However, Commissioner of Police, Chester Williams, not only named the suspect but stated that the motive is believed to be drug-related.
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police: “He saw a person who was his friend, Shane Bennett and I can call his name. He saw Shane Bennet who was a friend but of recent they have had some disagreement and we believe that it is over drugs and Shane Bennett took out a gun and fired several shots at him four of which made their marks I think hitting him in four different areas of the body. Mr.Parks has since been transported to the Southern Regional Hospital and from what I have been briefed he is listed in a critical condition. We are currently in pursuit of Shane Bennett for that matter.”
