Man Remanded to Belize Central Prison Placed on Suicide Watch
A Belize City man was placed on suicide watch today after he was remanded to the Belize Central Prison. Forty-eight-year-old Rene Castillo appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court today, charged with a single count of handling stolen goods. Castillo pleaded guilty to the charge but explained that he did not know the bicycle was stolen. He said he only borrowed the bicycle and paid the man that lent it to him five dollars to use it. The Magistrate explained that since he did not accept the facts as presented to him his guilty plea could not be accepted and an equivocal plea of not guilty was entered on his behalf. Castillo was granted bail in the sum of one thousand dollars; however, his records showed that he has an unpaid fine of over eighteen hundred dollars. He was told that he needs to pay at least a thousand dollars before he could post his bail, if not he would be remanded until his next court date. That’s when he broke down in tears, and after telling the magistrate to just give him 20 years, he announced that he would kill himself. He was remanded until January 9, 2024.
