The hands of justice have begun working in the case of the man seen assaulting a woman near the Pound Yard Bridge in Belize City. A video showing the assault went viral about a week ago and the public called on the police to investigate the matter. According to Superintendent Alejandro Cowo, the suspect, 41-year-old Eric Jones, was detained. He explained that the suspect and the victim, Kahlina Thurton, were arguing because Jones loaned a bicycle to Thurton but never got it back.
Supt. Alejandro Cowo, Head of National Crimes Investigation Branch, Belize City: “Police was able to identify the male person who is Eric Jones and they did an investigation and on yesterday’s date he was charged for common assault and he was before the court this morning. We spoke to the female and she provided some information to the police but did not actually give a written statement but in this case there are other procedures that we use to continue with the matter.”
Jones was arraigned before Senior Magistrate Aretha Ford. He was read a single charge of common assault upon Thurton. Jones was unrepresented and pleaded not guilty. He was given bail of $200 plus one surety, which he met.
