Man Sentenced to 19.5 Years for Sexual Assault on Niece

A 64-year-old man will serve nineteen and a half years in prison after he was convicted of engaging in unlawful sexual intercourse with his niece on two occasions and sexually molesting her on two other occasions.  The sentence was handed down today by Justice Candace Nanton.  The prison term takes effect from the date of his incarceration, April 2, 2023.  The elderly, who was unrepresented, man had no mitigation plea nor did any character witness show up on his behalf.  The backstory to the case is that the man engaged in unlawful sexual intercourse with his sister’s 13-year-old daughter twice in 2019, and had also sexually assaulted the child twice in 2020.  Upon sharing the victim’s impact statement, the convicted man showed no remorse.  During the trial, in his defence, he claimed that it was the child’s father who had carried out the acts.  The child testified, however, that the uncle would come to her when she would be sleeping on the floor and take her to his room which was behind the house.  She said she went with her uncle out of fear.  She further testified that he would then give her money and chocolate for her silence.  The child eventually confided in her mother and the matter was reported to the Police.  In handing down the judgement in early March, Justice Nanton said that the child was firm in her testimony of events that occurred and that the prosecution had satisfied the court to render a guilty verdict.  Since the victim is related to the abuser, his name cannot be released to the public.
